Common Chaffinch, Зяблик, Σπίνος, Fringilla coelebs

Common Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) flock foraging on tilled agricultural land – close-up wildlife footage of passerine birds. In this video, I captured a group of Common Chaffinches, *Fringilla coelebs*, busily foraging on a sun-drenched, recently tilled field. The ground is a mix of rich brown soil, scattered with dry straw and emerging green sprouts. You can clearly see both male and female birds; the males stand out with their vibrant reddish-brown underparts and striking blue-grey caps, while the females display more subdued brown and grey plumage. They move with characteristic quick hops, meticulously scanning the ground. Each bird repeatedly pauses to peck precisely at the earth, likely digging for fallen seeds, grain remnants, or small invertebrates disturbed by the recent tilling. Occasionally, a bird takes a short, low flight to a new spot, never straying far from the group. Common Chaffinches are a highly adaptable species, found across a broad range of habitats from dense woodlands to urban gardens and open farmland. Their presence here, on agricultural land in Cyprus, highlights their opportunistic feeding behavior. While they are primarily known for their diet of seeds, particularly in the autumn and winter months, they readily consume insects and other invertebrates, especially during the breeding season when they need protein to feed their young. This behavior makes them common visitors to cultivated fields, where tilling can expose a wealth of potential food sources.
