🐾 Watch closely — can you spot all the hidden legends of Saint Petersburg in the video? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saint Petersburg is impossible to imagine without cats. They live in its hidden courtyards, warm themselves by old windows, slip beneath archways, wander along the embankments, and have long become part of the city’s legend. In Saint Petersburg, cats are more than cute characters — they are tiny guardians of home, warmth, memory, and hope. In this musical interpretation of Alexander Pushkin’s “Winter Morning,” classic Russian poetry meets a gentle winter fairy tale about two little cats — set against snow, sunlight, old Petersburg windows, and the quiet feeling that something beautiful is about to happen. “Frost and Sun” is an English song adaptation inspired by Pushkin’s beloved poem “Winter Morning”: a warm winter story where Russian poetry, Saint Petersburg atmosphere, and two little cats come together in one snowy world. Cats have a special place in the history and mythology of Saint Petersburg. On Malaya Sadovaya Street, two famous bronze cats — Yelisey the Cat and Vasilisa the Cat — have become beloved symbols of the city. According to one popular story, they commemorate the cats that helped save Leningrad from a plague of rats during and after the Siege of Leningrad. Cats were first brought from the Yaroslavl region, and later thousands of Siberian cats arrived to protect homes, warehouses, museums, and palaces, including the Hermitage. Yelisey the Cat appeared on Malaya Sadovaya Street on January 25, 2000, and Vasilisa the Cat appeared on April 1 of the same year. Today, they remain among the city’s most unusual and touching landmarks. This is a song about a winter morning, light after a storm, memory, home — and those small guardians of warmth without whom Saint Petersburg would not be the same. Yet still you dream, my dear, my bright — Awake, my beauty, rise! Unseal your eyes, by softness bound, And meet Aurora northward-crowned, The northern star of skies! Last night, remember, blizzards cried, Across the murky heavens sighed; The moon, a pallid stain, Through gloomy clouds was yellowing dim, And you sat sorrowful and slim — But now... look through the pane: Beneath the blue and boundless skies, Like splendid carpets, bright it lies — The snow in sunlight spread; The lonely woods show dark and sheer, The fir through rime is greening clear, The river gleams ice-clad. The whole room glows with amber light; The heated stove, alive and bright, Cracks with a merry cheer. How sweet to dream beside the bed! But shall we not command, instead, The brown mare’s harness here? Across the morning snow we’ll glide, My dearest friend, and give our ride To that impatient steed; We’ll visit fields in silence spread, The woods so lately thick and red, And shores my heart still needs. Beneath the blue and boundless skies, Like splendid carpets, bright it lies — The snow in sunlight spread; The lonely woods show dark and sheer, The fir through rime is greening clear, The river gleams ice-clad. --------------------------------------------------------- Original poem: А. С.
