The orange minivet (Pericrocotus flammeus) is a vibrant avian species belonging to the cuckooshrike family, Campephagidae. Predominantly found along the Western Ghats and the west coast of India as well as in Sri Lanka, this bird was once classified as a subspecies of the scarlet minivet, which inhabits a broader range spanning eastern and northern India, as well as Southeast Asia. Its preferred habitats encompass temperate forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Measuring approximately 17 – 22 cm in length and weighing between 19 - 24.5 g, male orange minivets exhibit a striking combination of bright orange and black plumage, while females are predominantly yellow with a grey upper surface. Males boast a glossy black head, chin, throat, mantle, and upper back, with orange-red lower back, rump, and uppertail-coverts. Their underparts are predominantly bright orange-red, providing distinct visibility within their environment. Notably, males can be distinguished from other Pericrocotus species by isolated red markings near the tips of tertials and inner secondaries. In contrast, females feature a yellow forehead and ashy-grey lower back. Red areas present in males are replaced by yellow in females, with the addition of a yellow chin and almost entirely bright yellow undersides. Juveniles closely resemble females, albeit with some variation. Highly gregarious in nature, orange minivets are often observed foraging in small groups, typically consisting of more than two individuals, along the treetops within forested areas. Known for their bouncing flights over the forest canopy, they primarily feed on insects, adopting a perching and scanning strategy to locate prey. Their hunting technique involves making flights and hovering at plant surfaces to pick off insects—a behavior commonly referred to as sally-gleaning. Furthermore, they frequently engage in mixed-species foraging parties with other canopy-dwelling bird species. Emitting sweeping whistles composed of multiple "weep-sweep" notes, the call of the orange minivet is frequently heard during flight or while stationary.
